Dear students and teachers,
Good morning! Today is the first day of this semester, and also our
Chinese traditional Lantern Festival. At first I wish all of you happy
Lantern Festival! Today there are also our friends from Frankfurt
attending our ceremony, let’s welcome them with the warmest applause!
Guangzhou, which located in the south part of China, is also a warm
city. You can nearly find snow here in the winter, not to mention the
heavy snow. Several days before Chinese New year this year, fell a
little scattered light snow in Guangzhou, which already rare in decades
and enough to make all the citizens here excited. I believed that some
of our students and teachers went out to see this rare sight as well.
But it will be a different story for our German friends. Germany lies
in a high latitudes area, and the latitude of Frankfurt is nearly the
same as the northernmost area Mohe in China. The winter in Germany is
much colder than ours, and you should be about to see snow often. I am
wondering if you guys know one of our Chinese famous saying that a timely
snow promises a good harvest. Do our Chinese students know about the
theory behind this saying?
China is one of the four ancient civilizations. The ancients in China
summarized pretty of experiences in the longterm farming, which also
reflects the wisdom of Chinese people. Today I want to talk about the
theory behind this “timely snow promises a good harvest”.
First of all snow is able to preserve the heat of earth, which make it
warm enough for plants to live. And then as the snow melted it has to
absorb a lot of heat from the soil, which make the soil cold enough
to kill the most eggs of pest. It effectively reduces the number of
pests in the coming year. Meanwhile nitrogen in the snow can also be
the best fertilizers, which help plants grow better.
Dear students, we may have some criticism in our mind about the cold
winter and feel like the warm spring more. We understand that sunshine
and rain help the plants to grow without knowing that snow help as
well. However, even though we are in south part of china, the warm
winter make people anxious. It calls for our deep thought.
If the white snows help crops grow better, difficulties and setbacks
can also be the need of our personal development. Just as the snows
bring crops benefit but not harm, difficulties and setbacks bring us
also benefit but not harm. Thats why what we need is a strong will
and the spirit of struggle but not complains and resist when we face
difficulties.
Dear students, in the long run of history our nation can keep standing
and our culture can be inherited generation after generation it is
because Chinese people have a strong will and the spirit of bearing
hardships and hardworking. Just this kind of spirit helps us to repress
the internal trouble, resist aggressions and firm our footing. Today
china will keep going and developing, which needs us to inherit this
good qualities. Our nation needs us to be strong enough to face any
hardship, to be brave enough to exploit and innovate. It is the only
way for us to get closer to the developed countries of the world.
Dear students, new semester means new start and new hope, it also means
new challenge. I hope all of you can adjust to the best condition as
fast as possible to hug this new term.
At last I want to use a poem from Heinrich Heine to end up my speech.
“A snow flurry across you.But its not a snow flurry, you soon see,
with joyful dread. Its fragment spring blossom, teasing, veiling you
instead. What sweet, terrible enchantment, winters changing into May,
snow is changing into blossom.”
I wish you guys all the best in Lantern Festival again!
